As a follow-up to its Comprehensive Plan, Augusta County has begun the development of a countywide economic development strategic plan. The plan will include strategies for retaining and expanding the businesses currently in the County, including specific recommendations on items such as an existing industry program, a workforce training program, and a financial incentive program. It will also identify the County’s strengths and weaknesses and an action plan for attracting compatible new businesses and industries to the County, including specific recommendations on target industries, recruitment strategies, suitable industrial sites, establishment of an office of economic development, marketing strategies, and a training program. The County has hired Moran, Stahl and Boyer to lead this effort. The project will include interviews with key community stakeholders and major employers, as well as a survey of local businesses. Public meetings, including sessions at the area high schools and community colleges, are also part of the project.
The economic development strategic plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. Interim reports will be released and public presentations made throughout the process. Copies of those reports and presentations will be posted on the County’s website. To learn more about the project, please feel free to contact the County’s Community Development Department at (540)245-5700 or email your questions to dcobb@co.augusta.va.us.
