The Augusta County Animal Control Department is responsible for enforcing state code and county ordinances for domestic animals.

Strays: Augusta County has a contract with the SPCA. Any dog that is running at large in the county may be picked up by a Animal Control Officer and transported to the SPCA. If your dog is missing, you can call the SPCA at (540) 885-7722.
After seven days (without a collar) or twelve days (with a collar) they are made available for adoption.
When you claim your dog, you must pay a fine of:
- $50 (if running at large without a valid rabies vaccination)
- $25 (if running at large)
- $10 (if no county dog tag)
- $20 pick-up fee
- $126.50 impoundment fee
These fines are paid at the Augusta County Treasurer's Office at the Government Center in Verona. Summons may also be issued to appear in General District Court with fines there ranging up to $250 per violation.
Animal Bites and Rabies: Animal bites that include dog and cat bites and scratches are evaluated by the Virginia Department Health. The decision to test an animal for rabies is governed by the Dept of Health. The Augusta County contact is Sean Sprouse - 332-7830.
Wildlife: Wildlife, which includes but not limited to deer, bear, opossums, skunks and raccoons are under the jurisdiction of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The Game Commission can be contacted at (540)248-9360
Staunton and Waynesboro: The cities of Staunton and Waynesboro provide their own animal control services. If you live within the city limits you need to contact the appropriate department.
