New Process for Business Owners Seeking a Fictitious Name Certificate

As of January 1, 2020, new business owners must apply for an assumed or fictitious name certificate with the State Corporation Commission.
Post Date:12/16/2019 2:35 PM

The County of Augusta Community Development Department would like to advise citizens that, as of January 1, 2020, new business owners must file for certificates of assumed or fictitious names with the State Corporation Commission. This is in response to House Bill 1925, passed earlier this year.

Previously, new business owners could file for a fictitious name certificate through the Community Development Department along with their zoning certificate and then apply for their business license with the Commissioner’s Office, all at the Government Center. New business owners can still apply for their zoning certificate through Community Development, with or without an assumed or fictitious name certificate, but will need to have their certificate from the State Corporation Commission before filing for a business license with the Commissioner’s office.

For information on how and where to file a fictitious name certificate, please contact the Clerk’s Office at (804) 371-9733 or toll-free in Virginia at 1-866-722-2551. Individuals can also visit the State Corporation Commission website to learn more.
