Augusta County is looking for county residents to serve on the Board of Equalization and is accepting applications online through March 1, 2024.
Post Date:02/13/2024 12:33 PM

The reassessment process in Virginia requires a Board of Equalization (BOE) to be appointed by the Circuit Court. Augusta County is looking for county residents to serve on the BOE. Applications will be accepted via online application or by downloaded form, mailed or emailed. Applications are due by March 1, 2024, to give the court time to make appointments before March 31, 2024, when the final land book with updated 2024 reassessment information is certified.

What does the BOE do?

The BOE will work to equalize real estate assessments in Augusta County by conducting hearings for those citizens who believe that there is a lack of uniformity in assessment, errors in the acreage of the assessment, or that property was assessed at more than fair market value. The BOE will hear complaints and consider whether or not to adjust the assessment by increasing, decreasing or affirming the assessment.

Eligibility and Time Commitment

The board is made up of five members who are broadly representative of the community. Members should own property in Augusta County and thirty percent of the members of the board should be commercial or residential real estate appraisers or other real estate professionals, builders, developers, or legal or financial professionals.

In order to be eligible for appointment by the judge, each prospective member must attend and participate in the basic course of training that is given by the Virginia Department of Taxation in April 2024. Members take an Oath of Office and must complete a Statement of Economic Interest.

Hearing dates will be scheduled based on volume of requests and will be conducted from May through October 2024 between 8 am and 5 pm on a weekday. Hearing days will be determined by the BOE and in accordance with Virginia Code requirements. Members can expect a minimum of two to three days per month commitment. As an example, there were 126 hearings over seven days for the 2019 reassessment. The term of service for the BOE is through December 31, 2024.

About the Reassessment Process

The Code of Virginia mandates that a general reassessment be conducted by the County of Augusta at least every six years. The last (and current) assessment was effective January 1, 2019. This reassessment is effective January 1, 2024.

The County contracted with the mass appraisal firm Wampler-Eanes Appraisal Group to perform the 2024 reassessment. Fieldwork is nearing completion and contractor hearings are scheduled to begin in February. The final land book with updated reassessment information will be certified to the Commissioner of Revenue by March 31, 2024.
