Verona, VA – March 15, 2024 – The Augusta County Board of Supervisors and County Administrators were pleased to host the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Augusta County Courthouse, which took place at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024. The event marked a significant milestone in the county's history as officials, stakeholders, and community members came together to celebrate the commencement of this long-awaited project.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on the construction site located near 100 Dick Huff Lane in Verona. Elected officials, local dignitaries, representatives from the design and construction teams, Augusta County staff and members of the community were in attendance.
The new Augusta County Courthouse represents a significant investment in the future of the county’s community. Designed to meet the evolving needs of Augusta County residents, dedicated spaces for the individual operational needs of the Augusta Circuit Courts, Augusta General District Courts, and the Augusta Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts; state-of-the-art amenities; and enhanced services will ensure the safety, security, and accessibility of Augusta’s judicial system.
"We are thrilled to celebrate this important moment in Augusta County's history," said Jeffrey Slaven, Chair of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors. "The new courthouse will not only serve as a symbol of our commitment to justice but also as a cornerstone for our community, fostering civic pride and enhancing the quality of life for generations to come."
The construction of the new courthouse symbolizes the realization of a vision first articulated in the county's master plan from 1987. The long-term vision detailed in the plan prioritizes the modernization and enhancement of civic infrastructure and county services to meet the changing needs of a growing community. In building this new courthouse in Verona, Augusta County moves the county seat from the City of Staunton, thus completing the final phase of the master plan and establishing a center for local government and the justice system for Augusta County in Augusta County.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks from Chairman Slaven, County Administrator Timothy K. Fitzgerald, and Vice-Chair Pamela Carter; a ceremonial groundbreaking; and an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the design and features of the new courthouse.
