The Augusta County Treasurer’s Office is proud to highlight Gail Peterson, whose Master Governmental Deputy Treasurer certification was recently extended by the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia. This recognition reflects Gail's dedication to her profession and her expertise in managing the financial operations that keep our county running smoothly.
As Deputy Treasurer, Gail's role involves serving as Tax Supervisor along with a wide variety of essential tasks. From managing check runs, banking transactions, and posting payments to reconciling accounts, she helps ensure that the county's financial transactions are accurate and efficient. She also facilitates the receipt of state funds for schools and Augusta County, handles building inspection transmittals, and provides oversight of accounts related to the Department of Social Services and Parks and Recreation. Her role also includes a strong customer service component, assisting residents with payment processing and helping them understand financial procedures—particularly beneficial for newcomers to the area.
What Gail enjoys most about her work is the people. “I love the team I work with,” she says, “and I really enjoy helping residents navigate through their questions and concerns. It’s rewarding to make a difference, even if it’s just by explaining a process or helping someone feel heard.”
Gail’s journey to Augusta County began in Buffalo, NY. After relocating to the area, she spent five years at the Rockbridge County Treasurer’s Office before joining Augusta County in 2016. Most recently, Gail spent two years in the Finance Department, where she gained invaluable insight into how collected taxes are allocated and budgeted. She found the experience challenging and rewarding, as it broadened her understanding of the bigger financial picture.
Her time in Finance deepened her appreciation for the intricacies of government operations. “There’s always something new to learn,” she says, “and I love the challenge of expanding my knowledge to better serve the county.”
Gail’s commitment to excellence, paired with her love for learning and helping others, makes her a valuable member of the Augusta County team. We are grateful for her hard work and dedication, and we congratulate her on the renewal of her certification.
