Personal property statements have been mailed through the US Postal Service. Individuals and businesses with tangible personal property in Augusta County should receive a statement. This statement gives tax payers an opportunity to update and correct information such as current address and personal property that has been disposed of, sold, or added to your personal property listing.

The statement details the listing of an individual’s tangible personal property located in Augusta County on January 1, 2025. Personal property includes automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, campers, boats, trailers, aircraft, mobile homes, machinery and tools, business furniture and fixtures, and other business-related equipment.

File your statement.

When you receive the statement, please:

  1. verify the preprinted information,
  2. correct any information that is not accurate, and
  3. return the verified / corrected statement to the Commissioner of Revenue’s office.

Personal Property Tax Relief

In Virginia, personal property tax relief is provided for passenger cars, motorcycles, or pickup or panel trucks with passenger plates that have a registered gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less.

Individuals do not need to apply for personal property tax relief. If there is a “Y” in the personal use column, you are already receiving tax relief on the associated property item. If your item is listed with an “N” in the personal use column, and you feel the item does qualify according to the criteria and questions on the back of the statement (and outlined below), please contact the Commissioner of Revenue’s office. Motor homes, trailers, and farm use vehicles do not qualify for tax relief and are non-applicable; you will see these items listed as “NA.”

To qualify for tax relief, a vehicle must:

  1. Be owned by or leased by an individual under a contract requiring the individual to pay the personal property tax AND
  2. Be used less than 50% for business purposes

Does your vehicle qualify for tax relief?

  • Is more than 50% of the mileage for the year used as a business expense for federal income tax purposes OR reimbursed by an employer?
  • Is more than 50% of the depreciation associated with the vehicle deducted as a business expense for federal income tax purposes?
  • Is the cost of the vehicle expensed pursuant to Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Service code?
  • Is the vehicle leased by an individual and the leasing company pays the tax without reimbursement from the individual?

If you can answer YES to any of the previous questions, your vehicle is considered under Virginia code to have a business use and does NOT qualify for car tax relief.

The Commissioner of the Revenue’s office will gladly assist in filing this form. The Commissioner’s counter is open from 8am-5pm at the Government Center.

If you do not receive a personal property statement or if you have questions, please call  the Commissioner of the Revenue's office at 540-245-5640.
