Where to Dispose of Waste in Augusta County

Augusta County has options for residents to dispose of waste safely and conveniently.

With seasonal cleaning and yard work underway, many residents are wondering how to properly dispose of their household waste. Augusta County offers a range of options to help you do just that—safely, conveniently, and responsibly.

Convenience Sites

Augusta County operates 10 convenience sites where residents can dispose of household trash, recycling, and compactible waste.

Hours:    Monday–Saturday, 7 am – 5:30 pm

Locations:

Accepted at Convenience Sites

  • Household trash & compactible refuse (Items must originate from Augusta County)
  • Recyclables - (with the exception of Deerfield)

Not Accepted at Convenience Sites

  • Explosives, gasoline, kerosene, or waste oils
  • Air conditioners
  • Appliances (take to landfill)
  • Batteries
  • Brush (loose not accepted, but bagged yard waste is allowed)
  • Business/industrial waste
  • Building materials - in large quantities
  • Dead animals or hazardous waste
  • Furniture that is large or bulky
  • Mattresses

Augusta Regional Landfill

The Augusta Regional Landfill serves Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro and processes around 500 tons of waste daily. It accepts a wider variety of items, including some that are prohibited at convenience sites. For the full disposal guide, visit their website: https://www.augustawater.com/disposalguide

Accepted at the Landfill

  • Air conditioners & dehumidifiers
  • Alkaline batteries - (see the batteries that are not permitted below)  
  • Antifreeze
  • Non-freon appliances (e.g., stoves, washers, dryers)
  • Ashes (cool and before 3:30 PM)
  • Construction materials
  • Computers and electronics
  • Dead animals (8 AM–2 PM only)
  • Furniture
  • Motor oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid
  • Latex paint (must be dried out)
  • Propane tanks (with a 3-inch hole)
  • Refrigerators (doors and shelves removed)
  • TVs
  • Tires (fee applies)
  • Yard waste (brush, clippings, wood)

Recycling at the Landfill

  • Aluminum cans
  • Cardboard & paper
  • Glass
  • Lead-acid (car) batteries
*Note: Plastic is no longer recycled at the landfill. Please dispose of it in compactors or open tops.

Not Accepted at the Landfill

  • Asbestos
  • CFLs & fluorescent tubes
  • Hazardous batteries (such as NiCad, Lithium-Ion, NiMh, LiPo)
  • Cell phones and electronics with hazardous batteries
  • Gasoline
  • Oil-based paints and stains
  • Prescription drugs (drop off at the Augusta County Sheriff's Office in Verona)

2025 Household Hazardous Waste Day

Some items not accepted at convenience sites or the landfill can be dropped off at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day.

Accepted Items Include:

  • Aerosolized cans
  • Batteries (NiCad, Ni MH, Lithium, Lithium Ion)
  • CFL & fluorescent bulbs
  • Gasoline
  • Herbicides & pesticides
  • Mercury-containing devices
  • Oil-based paints & stains
  • Polyurethane
  • Propane, oxygen, and helium tanks
  • Solvents (acidic or basic)
