Governor Northam and the Augusta County Board of Supervisors have declared a State of Emergency related to the COVID-19 virus.  Public access to the Government Center has been restricted to essential business.

How To Obtain a Business License

Each business operating in Augusta County is required to obtain a business license. Below are the steps and what you will need to bring:


  • You must obtain a zoning certificate for the location of your business from Community Development (540-245-5700).
  • If you are using a trade name, you must register the name with the State Corporation Commission at
  • You will need to bring the zoning certificate and trade name registration to our office to apply for the business license.
  • Full legal name (if Corporation or LLC)
  • An estimate of the gross revenue you expect the business to earn until December 31 of the year the business will open.
  • A complete description of the type of business.
  • A federal ID number/social security number for the business.
  • A physical and mailing address.
  • Phone number
  • Contact name
  • Start date
  • Class A, B or C number (if contractor)
  • Workers Compensation Insurance information (if contractor)-provide confirmation letter after you file Form 61A-


Important Dates
New Businesses - must apply for a business license within 30 days of beginning to avoid a late filing penalty

March 1 - all business licenses must be renewed to avoid a late filing penalty. The renewal application is sent to every business in January. Complete the application and return through the mail by the March 1 deadline or come by the revenue counter and renew in person.
