Augusta County Building Inspection is responsible for ensuring public health, safety, and welfare associated with the design, construction, and utilization of public and private buildings. County inspectors inspect for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

Permits must be obtained to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, convert, or demolish any building in Augusta County.  Permits are also required for installation or changes to electrical, plumbing, or mechanical systems.

Applications for all permits are filed in the Building Inspection Office and all applications must be approved and fees paid before work can begin.  Work must be started within six months and continue over each six month period until work is complete to keep the permit valid.

PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with Section 105.4 Records of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, Augusta County Building Department retains building permit records for 3 years after project completion. It is recommended that applicants retain any and all copies of permits, plans and inspection reports in the event they sell their home and need to respond to home inspector inquiries. Retaining this information is also useful for future additions, remodeling or financing needs.
