Information about the Augusta County

Victim Witness Assistance Program

The Augusta County Victim Witness Assistance Program was established in 1990. The program is located within the Augusta County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The program consists of four advocates, a program director, assistant program director, part-time advocate, and domestic violence program coordinator, who provide direct services to victims of crime in Augusta County. The role of each advocate is to reduce the trauma of victimization and encourage crime victims and witnesses to cooperate with and participate in the criminal justice system. The advocates provide direct services including providing court date notification of judicial proceedings, providing case disposition information, registering crime victims with VINELink for inmate information if requested, assisting crime victims with participation in the Virginia Victims Fund for eligible crime related expenses, and any other assistance required by the Crime Victim and Witness Rights Act [Virginia Code § 19.2-11.01]. The advocates help to explain the criminal justice system and what to expect at the various stages, provide written materials to crime victims and witnesses with information on how to obtain the program’s services, and summarizes crime victim and witness rights. Virginia Code § 19.2-11.01 recognizes the following individuals as crime victims in Virginia: A person who has suffered physical, psychological, or economic harm as a direct result of the commission of a felony or certain misdemeanors. The misdemeanors offenses are assault and battery, assault and battery against a family member, stalking, violation of a protective order, sexual battery, attempted sexual battery, or maiming or driving while intoxicated.
