John K. Craft has lived in the Augusta County area for 50 years, and has served his community and the Commonwealth for over 32 years in various law enforcement positions. He first became interested in a law enforcement vocation through his education at Blue Ridge Community College and in serving as a Staunton Police Reserve Officer. He was hired by then Sheriff Glenn Lloyd as a Jail Deputy for the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and attended the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Academy, where he finished at the top of his class academically.
Wanting to expand his career, Craft accepted a Police Officer position with the City of Staunton, working for Chief Butch Wells. After completion of Academy training, Craft served as a patrol officer, field training officer, Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) officer, bicycle patrol officer, and instructed radar and firearms for the department and the Academy. Craft continued to broaden his ability to serve through the completion of several advanced training programs.
Craft then pursued a career at the state level in 2000, accepting a Special Agent position with the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. During his service to the Commonwealth of Virginia, Craft completed additional complex training, and was promoted to Senior Special Agent in 2006. Craft focused on financial criminal investigation, legal interpretation, administrative law, and continued to teach in multiple disciplines. He also assisted with dozens of complex long-term investigations, worked in undercover operations, mentored and instructed new hires, and at the time of his retirement in 2003, was one of the longest serving Agents within the Bureau of Enforcement.
Craft continued to feel a call to serve his community, and accepted a part-time Deputy Sheriff position from Sheriff Donald Smith and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office immediately upon his retirement. During his service at the Office, Craft has assisted with the courts, the civil division, training, and provided security to the public and Augusta County officials at meetings held at the Augusta County Government Center.
Craft completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Eastern Mennonite University, specializing in Management and Organizational Development. Later in life, Craft felt the call to ministry in the Presbyterian Church, and completed four years of full-time studies through the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (Iowa), graduating with a Master of Divinity degree in 2015, and began serving as the Pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Staunton, Virginia.
Craft has been married to Vickie (Arehart) Craft for 31 years, and is a proud parent of Laura Craft, who has begun her teaching career in Augusta County. Craft has held numerous community leadership positions within fraternal and non-profit organizations, and currently serves as a member of the Valley Mission Board of Directors and as a Trustee for the Shenandoah Presbytery Corporation.
In his spare time, Craft enjoys the outdoors, photography, reading, and shooting sports.
