As of July 1, 2020, voters do not need a reason to apply for an absentee mail ballot.

You can apply online for an absentee ballot with a Virginia driver's license.

If you do not have a Virginia driver's license, you may apply using a printed application.  Complete the form and mail, email or fax it to:  Voter Registration Office, 18 Government Center Lane, PO Box 590, Verona, VA  24482, registrar@co.augusta.va.us,  540-245-5037 fax.  

Carefully review the instructions to complete and return your ballot to your local registrar by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. If you are returning your ballot by-mail, it must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by your registrar by noon on the third day after the election.

If you have submitted an absentee ballot application for a ballot to be sent by mail, you can track your ballot by logging into Ballot Scout through the Virginia Department of Elections to track its progress. Make sure you enter your name exactly as it is on your registration to vote.

You can vote early in-person for the August 4, 2026, Republican Primary at the Government Center, Monday through Friday starting June 18, 2026, from 8 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm (closed from 1 pm to 2 pm).  

In-Person voting hours on Saturdays for the Primary:
Saturday, July 25, 2026, 9 am - 5 pm
Saturday, August 1, 2026, 9 am - 5 pm

 In-Person Voting hours on Sundays for the Primary:

Sunday, July 18, 2026, and July 26, 2026, 11 am - 4 pm

Find out if you are registered to vote on the VA Department of Elections website.

Select your locality, insert your full name, date of birth and last four of your social security number to verify your voter registration status, polling place and to track absentee and provisional ballot status. 

To be eligible to register to vote in Virginia a person must: 

• Be a resident of Virginia (A person who has come to Virginia for temporary purposes and intends to return to another state is not considered a resident for voting purposes.) 
• Be a U. S. Citizen
• Be 18 years old (Any person who is 17 years old and will be 18 years of age at the next general election shall be permitted to register in advance and also vote in any intervening primary or special election.) 
• Not claim the right to vote in any other state
• Not currently be declared mentally incompetent by a court of law 
• If convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored

To register you must complete and submit a Virginia Voter Registration Application.

Applications may be obtained and submitted at the local voter registration office, or through online application submission through the Virginia Department of Elections. You may register to vote year-round except during the 21 days prior to a general or primary election.

Paper registration applications may be deposited at our office in person or by mail. Virginia Law requires that those who register by mail, rather than in person, will be required to vote in person the first time they vote. Exempt from this requirement are military service members and dependents, overseas citizens employed outside the continental U.S., full-time students, and disabled persons. 

Voter ID Requirements 
Virginia law requires all voters to provide an ID to vote. Find acceptable forms of identification on the VA Department of Elections website. 

Voters arriving at the polls without an acceptable ID will be required to vote using a provisional ballot and will have until noon on the Friday after the election to deliver either a copy of acceptable identification to their locality's electoral board OR a signed ID Confirmation Statement in order for their provisional ballot to be counted. A written notice from election officials given to the voter will provide the necessary information, including email, fax, and address where the ID or ID Confirmation Statement should be delivered.

Acceptable forms of identification for voting at the polling place or voting early include the following:

• Voter confirmation documents you received after you registered to vote
• Virginia DMV-issued Driver’s License or Identification Card
• Valid United States Passport
• Any ID card issued by the US, Virginia, or a local Virginia government
• Any student ID card, containing a photograph, issued by a US university or community college
• Valid student ID issued by a public school or private school in Virginia
• Employer-issued photo ID card
• Any current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document with your name and address
• A signed ID Confirmation Statement
